An Icon Returns@headingTag>
On a cool April evening in 1996, the lead singer of one of the world’s biggest bands stepped out at Maine Road wearing the Umbro Drill Top. A flash of the Double Diamond under stage lights, and an era-defining look was born blending music and football culture in a way that shaped a generation.
First introduced as part of the original Choice of Champions training range, the Drill Top was designed for performance combining comfort, durability and a cut made for movement. It quickly transcended the pitch, becoming a staple in the terraces and on the streets through the Britpop explosion and the UK rave scene of the 1990s.
Now, nearly thirty years later, the 2025 reissue stays true to the original’s spirit. The stitch for stich recreation is made from 100% cotton drill, the updated version features a garment-washed finish, a boxy relaxed fit, ribbed collar and cuffs, contrast inserts at the V-neck and forearms, and cut-and-sew seams with twin-needle stitching. An adjustable hem with a drawcord ensures a tailored feel, while heritage detailing like the stacked Diamond embroidery and the Pro Training patch nod back to its roots.
Shot across Manchester Hulme, Moss Side, Castlefields, and Burnage, the campaign captures the spirit of where it all began. Delivered through an A5 zine and short film, the story blends football heritage with the energy of the city that shaped it.
The Drill Top never really left. But now, it’s ready to take centre stage again.
